Understanding BMI

Now that you’ve used the BMI calculator (or even if you’re still thinking about using it), here’s a little bit about what BMI actually is. Those three letters stand for “Body Mass Index,” a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.

One thing that’s really important to note is that there are some limitations to what BMI can tell about you. Mainly, that it doesn’t take into account muscle mass. According to a BMI Calculator, Arnold Schwarzenegger would have been obese in his prime with a body mass index of 31.

That was with a height of 6’2″ and weight between 235-260 pounds (in contest season/off-season for body building). It’s just something to keep in mind in case you put your numbers into the BMI calculator and think you are overweight when you may actually be in great shape.

Additionally, it can underestimate the amount of body fat in older people or those who have lost muscle mass.
